I was lucky enough to visit this beautiful country in May 2025, it has fast become my new favourite family holiday destination.

Before visiting Sri Lanka, I had a few preconceived ideas — but this beautiful island exceeded every expectation.

My eldest daughter had visited during her gap year and raved about the cuisine, calling it the best food she'd had the entire trip — and she wasn’t wrong! Sri Lanka is a food lover’s paradise. Many of the hotels we stayed in grow their own produce, often within a 1km radius, and much of it is organically farmed, offering guests fresh, sustainable, and incredibly flavourful dining experiences.

The wildlife was another unforgettable highlight. While I knew there would be opportunities to see animals, I hadn’t anticipated the sheer variety and spectacle. We enjoyed two safaris — one at sunrise and one at sunset — and were rewarded with sightings of exotic birdlife, playful monkeys, majestic elephants, and even leopards in the wild. Incredibly, elephants also roam freely by the roadside — it’s not unusual to pass one as you drive!

It is true, Sri Lanka is a total hidden gem, although they have some fabulous beaches, Sri Lanka is promoting itself as a touring destination. Most will hire a car and driver, the driver also acting as your guide. Rifaz was our guide, and he was wonderful!
