Skiing With Kids
Pre kids we were avid skiers, but when kids come along a ski holiday can seem like a daunting (and expensive task), however, skiing is a brilliant skill to learn and once you get it sooooo much fun!! Here are our top tips…
Kit:
Borrow or buy second-hand kit, especially for younger kids, many kids will only ski for 1wk a year, and once you have bought that kit, it is unlikely to last until the following year, so buy second-hand or borrow! That said, it is worth taking spares (esp trousers), accidents can happen (we learnt the hard way lol)
Go to ski school
Don’t try and teach your kids yourself, find a ski school which caters for kids at the right age and ability, they will have far more fun with their peers!
Find a family-friendly resort with minimal walking
Try and find a resort that has minimal walking, especially to the nursery/beginner slope, little ones (even big ones) won’t want to carry skis for long!! Make sure your beginner or nursery slope is close!
Buy or rent a sledge
Sledging is brilliant fun, you can pick up “bum sledges” in most resorts cheaply, they are great fun, or in most resorts, you can even rent one. We used a sledge to pull our 18m old around as the pushchair just wouldn’t work on snowy paths!
Take snacks
When you have kids this is a mantra for any outing, trip or holiday, but skiing is hard work, so this is especially important!
Find a resort with other activities and have fun!
There are loads of fun things to do apart from just skiing. Many resorts have other activities on offer, from swimming (outdoor swimming in snow is loads of fun, like swimming in a bath but with a snowy mountain backdrop!), horse drawn sledge rides, tobogganing and loads more!
Take a friend
Especially if you have older kids, they can find ski school, where they don't know anyone hugely daunting. Take a friend with them, learning with friends is always more fun!
Have lessons in the UK
We have a few dry slopes here in the UK, or if you want a more authentic experience take a trip to one of our fantastic snow domes, they can be found in Hemel Hempstead, Milton Keynes, Manchester Glasgow & Tamworth.
